Sloan-C Online Workshop on

Web 2.0 in Higher Education

From Wikipedia:

"iTunes is a proprietary digital media player application, used for playing and organizing digital music and video files. The program is also an interface to manage the contents on Apple's popular iPod digital media players as well as the iPhone. Additionally, iTunes can connect to the iTunes Store via the Internet to purchase and download music, music videos, television shows, applications, iPod games, audiobooks, podcasts, feature length films and movie rentals, and ringtones (available only in the USA).  ...  iTunes is available as a free download for Mac OS X, Windows Vista, and Windows XP from Apple's website."

The "assignment" for the Sloan-C online workshop is to download and install the free iTunes software, and then use it to subscribe to one or more podcasts of interest.  Let the others in the workshop know about your favorite podcasts.

Downloading and Installing the iTunes Software

Go to the website at

Click on the "Download now" link, which will take you to the download page:

You will have to enter your e-mail address; then click on the "Download iTunes Free" button.  You will download the installer file, iTunesSetup.exe.  Run this file to install the iTunes software on your computer.  Follow the onscreen instructions. On the last screen, select “Yes, take me to the iTunes Store,” then click "Done".

Subscribing to Podcasts (part 1)

Once you are at the iTunes Store, you can search for podcasts.  Select the "Podcasts" link:

Navigate to "Education", then to "Higher Education":

One of the featured podcasts (at the time of creating this tutorial) was "12 Byzantine Rulers:  The History of the Byzantine Empire" - so it was selected (but you really can select any interesting podcast you see on the screen).  Clicking on the link will take you to a page where you can subscribe to that podcast series.  Simply click on the "SUBSCRIBE" button to subscribe to the RSS feed for that podcast:

You will be able to go to the "Podcasts" section of iTunes and play the podcast from the series to which you subscribed - in this example, Part 15 from the "12  Byzantine Rulers" series was selected.  Simply highlight the podcast and click on the "play" button (right-facing arrow) in the upper left of the iTunes window to listen to the podcast:

Note that when you subscribe to a podcast series, only the most recent podcast is downloaded to your computer.  To download earlier podcasts in the series, click on the "GET" button (or the "GET ALL" button).

Once you have subscribed to a podcast, go on to the second half of the tutorial.
