Comments on the Student-Led Discussions

In past semesters, a number of students have asked me to provide additional details about what I am looking for in the student-led discussions.  Since I already have a number of handouts that deal with this topic, I guess the best way to provide additional information is by example.

Here is an excellent student-led discussion:

Note that the student who posted the original discussion question (Mary) engaged other students in real dialogue - there was a real exchange of ideas.  One of the exchanges (with Yuriy) went back and forth over three days.

By contrast, here is an example of a poor student-led discussion:

Note that the student who posted the original question never responded to any of the three students who answered his question, and the thread just died.  There was no discussion, and no exchange of ideas.

I hope it is obvious that I want to see student-led discussions like the first one - and NOT like the second one.
