Kaltura: Media Management for the Campus

 

Kaltura LogoITS is excited to launch Kaltura campus-wide this fall. Kaltura allows us to better manage and deploy media in websites, through mobile devices, in Blackboard, and more. Kaltura integrates with the tools we already use for media, including Blackboard, WordPress, and Camtasia Relay, improving the ease with which we make videos and other rich-media content available and accessible across all platforms and devices. Faculty, staff, and students can now easily record, upload, and share videos.

Lync 2013: UIS' Solution for Web Conferencing and Online Courses/Meetings

Microsoft Lync

Microsoft Lync is a communication tool that allows users to collaborate in real-time via text chat, audio/video chat, and desktop sharing.

 

Lync is our campus-wide solution for web conferencing, which you can now do at your convenience from any computer with Internet access and most mobile devices.

 

For faculty, Lync is the solution for communication with your online students, allowing you to host online class meetings, offer online office hours, have students do online group work, etc. Students will use the free Lync Web App to join sessions, which works on Mac and Windows computers, or the free Lync 2013 app on their mobile device.

 

Lync sessions can be started on-the-fly or be pre-scheduled through the Lync Scheduler.

Staying Connected and Informed

iPad Cart In an effort to improve communication to the entire campus regarding updates and maintenance, we encourage you to take advantage of our ITS Status Blog. Any changes made to services are posted here, as well as information about restoring services for unexpected disruptions of service.

In addition, the Instructional Support and Training team posts updates about innovative ways to use technology both in and out of the classroom. For anyone interested in learning more, please check out the ISAT blog for ideas about effective use of technology.

Digital Signage

iPad CartDigital signs are now available throughout campus, providing active content about campus events and activities, helpful information about campus services, and much more. We encourage you to check out the signs in PAC, UHB, SLB, and TRAC. Visit our digital signage webpage for more information, including how to submit content.




Information Security Awareness

During the National Cyber Security Awareness Month in October, ITS will be reaching out to the campus community on how to recognize and respond to security related incidents. We intend to display content using traditional posters and videos as well as utilizing the new digital signage located throughout the campus. Later in the month, ITS also plans to host a movie in Brookens Auditorium that will be free to the campus (date and time soon to follow).

In preparation for the event, ITS will be revamping the Security section of the ITS website. With this change, we hope not only to bring a new look, but also make it easier for the UIS community to locate pertinent information regarding Information Security announcements, developments, news, tips, and more.

Email Footprint Challenge

ITS is challenging UIS faculty and staff to a friendly competition toFootprint image see who can create the smallest email footprint by clearing out old messages. During the month of October, we are asking everyone to spend a little time deleting any unnecessary messages, including those in Sent and Deleted folders. Exciting prizes will be won by the department and the top two individuals who reduce their email footprint the most. Details will be coming out in Campus Announcements shortly!

The Email Footprint Challenge can help you eliminate unnecessary messages, organize your mailbox, reduce search time, locate messages faster, and save space. And, of course, the winners get bragging rights and coveted awards for a truly skinny digital footprint!

EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research (ECAR)

eCar LogoECAR conducts and disseminates research and analysis about the role and implication of information technology in higher education. ECAR assembles leading scholars, practitioners, researchers, and analysts to focus on issues of critical importance to higher education, many of which carry increasingly complicated and consequential implications. UIS is a Subscription Level member of ECAR. Our subscription gives everyone at UIS access to all ECAR research, including more than 20 major and minor reports, focused research bulletins, editable PowerPoint slides, infographics, data tables, and key findings and actionable recommendations.

Faculty Fellow

Josiah AlamuDr. Josiah Alamu, Assistant Professor in the Public Health program, is currently serving as the ITS Faculty Fellow.

Dr. Alamu spent the summer doing outreach with other departments and researching ways to better serve his students using technology.

We encourage faculty to talk with Dr. Alamu to see what he is doing in his courses and to find out what resources ITS can provide.

Introducing...

Clayton BellotWe are pleased to announce the promotion of Clayton Bellot to the new role as a Security Analyst within ITS. Clayton has held various roles over his fifteen years of service within IT but has always sought to promote security and best practices within the campus community. In his new role, Clayton will seek to develop ITS' business continuity planning efforts, promote a campus-wide security awareness program, review applicable information security policies, programs, and procedures, manage host-based IDS/IPS systems, and provide security-based incident handling.

We are pleased to announce the Bill Coxappointment of Bill Cox as the Manager of the Technology Support Center. Before coming the University of Illinois Springfield, Bill worked for 40 years in the private sector and served 4 years in the United States Air Force. In addition, he has spent 20 years as tenured faculty for both Lincoln Land Community College and Lake Land College. Since coming to the University of Illinois Springfield family, Bill has earned a Master's Degree in Management Information Systems. Bill is happy in his new role and hopes he can contribute to the mission of providing technological services to the students, faculty, and staff.

Steven DixonITS welcomed Steven Dixon to our Systems & Services team in September. Steven brings knowledge of Dell servers/workstations, Exchange, Active Directory, Barracuda, etc. We are thrilled to add him to our team and are looking forward to providing even better support for our campus community.

Kara McElwrathWe are pleased to announce the appointment of Kara McElwrath as the new Assistant Director of Client Services. Over the past six years, Kara has built strong relationships throughout campus and is well known among faculty, staff, and students for providing exemplary service and technology support and for introducing innovative technology solutions. In her new role Kara will provide direction and guidance to the ITS Technology Support Center, ITS Learning Spaces Support and Instructional Support & Training teams. The three teams already work together and coordinate their activities, but closer integration of our client support teams will benefit the campus and enhance our ability to proactively anticipate needs and to research, evaluate, and implement new and emerging technologies in support of teaching, learning, and administrative functions.
